About this Collection
Historic Stays is a reference collection of Australian heritage and historic accommodation — the kind of places where every floorboard creaks with its own provenance.
The entries here span Tasmanian convict-era sandstone, mid-19th-century goldfields cottages, woolshed stays in the New South Wales tablelands, Federation homesteads, restored hotels and boutique heritage rooms. Each property is catalogued with its location, era, and a short description of what makes it worth knowing about.
This site is informational. It exists to make Australian heritage accommodation easier to discover and to remember — both for travellers searching for somewhere with a longer story, and for anyone curious about the country's built history.
Editorial scope
Inclusion in the collection is by editorial selection. Properties are chosen for their historic significance, their state of preservation, and their continued availability as guest accommodation at the time of cataloguing. The collection skews toward properties pre-1900, but later interwar and post-war heritage examples are included where the building or its setting stands out.
Photographs, where used, are drawn from public owner-supplied promotional material at the time the entry was created. Where a property has changed ownership or significantly altered its offering, the entry may no longer reflect the current state of bookings. Always check directly with the current operator before planning a stay.
