The Granary, c. 1823

Sleeps 6 | Bedrooms 3 | Bathrooms 2

The Granary, Richmond Hill is a magnificent sandstone building on the banks of the Macquarie River, surrounded by picturesque farmland. It was built as a large barn by convicts over several months in 1823. The original owner of Richmond Hill, James Brumby, was transferred from Botany Bay to Van Diemen’s Land in 1806. Horses he left behind proved impossible to muster, and legend has it that Australia’s wild Brumby horses were named after him. He married Elizabeth, a widowed convict, sentenced to transportation after stealing a brass pot & pan.

In its almost-200 year history, the building has also been used as a stable, worker’s quarters and shearing shed. Now beautifully restored, The Granary is a magnificent three bedroom home offering self-contained, luxury accommodation. Sleeping six guests, with families and small groups welcome, there are two queen bedrooms, and the third has two singles. All beds are dressed with luxurious linens. There are two large bathrooms with organic bath products, and underfloor heating keeps you warm in the cooler months.

The hub of the home is The Granary's huge open-plan living area, framed by old Tasmanian oak beams that once were used to hold up shearing equipment. There’s a cosy wood heater and comfortable sofas, large TV, DVD, Foxtel, complimentary WiFi and Bluetooth speaker for all your entertainment needs. The full kitchen with Nepresso machine has all you need to create delicious meals, and features a central farmhouse table. From here, step outside to a large balcony with outdoor seating. Below the kitchen you’ll find the stables, now home to a laundry room for guests’ use.

With its golden stone walls, deep-set cedar windows, and rich wooden joinery, this is a stunning property, and equally beautiful are the surrounding established park-like gardens. Heritage-listed oak trees, expansive manicured lawns, an orchard, and hazelnut grove are all set against a backdrop of magical views. Wander through the superb formal lavender garden framed with box hedges, and be transported to the South of France. Host Fiona and family provide warm, friendly hospitality, and are happy to take you on a tour of the main homestead garden. Sit by the banks of the Macquarie River and fish for trout by day, and by night, savour a local Tassie wine and toast marshmallows over the firepit.

The Granary is one of those special, unique places of incredible beauty and character. A tranquil country escape and a world away from life’s distractions, immerse yourself in this remarkable heritage property that’s one of Australia’s finest luxury historic stays.
